What's a good name for a town?
I’m doing a little writing to pass the time and I need a name for the town that provides the setting for most of the book. It’s a small victorian/steam-punk town, and I’ve got something like "Silent Hill", "Sleepy Hollow" in mind. So yeah, basically, an adjective beginning with ‘S’ followed by a type of landscape. So far all I’ve really come up with are "Sandy pastures" which doesn’t make sense given that’s there’s no sand to speak of and even if there were it would be hard to explain why a pasture would have sand all over it… better yet, "Spectral Valley" which would mean that the town could be built in such a way that buildings are built on top of one another… diagonally… if you get my meaning (it doesn’t make sense otherwise), but there’s nothing in the story to do with ghosts… or better still, "Shady Meadows", which is actually grand, but I’d prefer to have more options at my disposal.
I’ve considered "Shady Valley" by the way, but it doesn’t have the best ring to it.
And besides, of course it’s going to be shady, it’s a valley.
Forsaken: I actually considered that one too, but that sounds more like the name of a lake. It doesn’t have to start with an ‘S’ by the way, it just seems like all the best ones do.
Edit: I mean "waterfall", not "lake". Ergh. Too tired.
Ahhh… Serenity valley?
No, dammit, that one was used in the series Firefly.
No AKA, that was actually pretty helpful. I hadn’t considered Grove yet.
The town’s on a different planet.

It sounds like you’re favouring valleys at the moment, so sticking with valleys: The human species was believed to have inhabited valleys around the time of their first evolving due to the temperatures remaining more stable, the shelter from strong winds, fresh water source, security reasons, etc. So you might want to have the word ‘Eden’ in there somewhere (Doesn’t look like you’re getting anywhere with ‘S’ words anyway), and maybe stick -berry onto the end of Eden. Mainly due to the fact that I like berries. So: Edenberry Vale or Valley.

That's funny… | Jan 27, 2010

wow, this is a good one. I think I have literally thought of every S adjective and got nothing snappy.

If your story is set in England then the town’s name is most likely going to be one word, not two.

Typical English town names end in -bury, -ton, -ham, -ville, -port, -bourne, – mouth, -dale, -bridge, -caster, -chester, -field

i.e. castle, town, settlement, village, port, dry valley, river estuary, valley, camp

If your town is an industrial one it is most likely near a waterway or possibly a harbour. So for instance if you have a river called e.g. the Brume, your town might be called Brumeham, Brumemouth, Brumebourne, Brumedale, Brumecaster, etc.
squeaky guinea pig | Jan 27, 2010

Silverdale
Spartan Lea
Sorrowful Lake
Servantsford
Soapworks Lane
Serenity Station (Station is good for Victorian Australia, or for a railway town)
Sawmill Halt
Swordsmiths Field
Sandstone Quarry
Spinney Farm
Saltmine Flats
Seedy Docklands
Satinwood Glade
Sylvan Bluff

However, many modern town names were used in Victorian times, and were re-used many times over, so you could pinch almost anything from a map of the country you are writing about and sound authentic (or, if a colonial country, from a map of a country that colonists came from.)

I look forward to reading your story.

What is a good ghost story?
I’m looking for a movie that is similar to the Amityville Horror (old or new) A ghost movie that is about an evil force/poltergeist that terrorizes a house. But these are the rules:

- It must have been made no earlier than 1994. So from 1994 to right now, the movie came out.
- It has to be in present time. So no new releases that take place in the 1800’s
- It has to be about a haunted house. No haunted hotels, schools, theatres, etc… Must be a haunted house.
- It must be rated pg-13 or R but preferably R. just saying it needs to be scary.
- Nothing cheesy with a bad script and bad actors.
- Must be ghosts (or demons) that are evil

Please do not give me paranormal activity, stir of echos, the others, session 9, the grudge, 1408, what lies beneath, house on haunted hill, the sixth sense, the haunting or a haunting in Connecticut. I’ve seen all those but I like ghost movies and need more. I don’t really like old movies though because they don’t scare me as much. and I can’t seem to stay interested.

Runaway Bride

Runaway Bride
Runaway Bride (1999)

IMDB rating: 5.20

Plot: Ike Graham, New York columnist, writes his text always at the last minute. This time, a drunken man in his favourite bar tells Ike about Maggie Carpenter, a woman who always flees from her grooms in the last possible moment. Ike, who does not have the best opinion about females anyway, writes an offensive column without researching the subject thoroughly. The next day, Ike gets fired by his publisher (and former wife), because he went too far and faked the facts, which real journalists don’t do. Ike’s only way back into the business now is to do a fact-based report on Maggie and her upcoming fourth wedding attempt, which Ike predicts to fail again. So, as he circles her like a vulture his prey-to-be, Maggie’s opinion of Ike sinks below zero. Not only is Ike waiting for her to fail again but the whole town is poking fun at Maggie about her mistakes. But that is a point which Ike doesn’t like.

What do you think about this lady in France that just got the ok from the government to marry her died fiance?
What you think about this lady here in France that just got the ok from the government (after 6 months) to marry the guy she was going to marry in a few days but unfortunately he lost his life in a car car accident. (here’s some facts: she wasn’t planning on marring him for money or citizenship, they’ve been together for many years and they had kids together.)
Here’s my thoughts on it:
How could the government give this lady the right to marry a died guy but some how gay people can’t marry each other? A died man has more rights to marry then a gay person! I mean come on! And isn’t that going to make other people who’ve lost loved ones before their "big day" to want to marry them as well?
Wouldn’t that be a big problem with inheritances?
Also what ever happen to the runaway bride/groom, those last minutes before you realize that matrimony is not for you, and cold feet?
What about the large increase of gold diggers and legal issues?
Is the government now the one that says I do!?
Please, don’t get me wrong; I feel very bad for the lady but come on! how can you get married to a died guy?
How can he sign the marriage contract? and even if you sign it for him, it’ll say that you married him six months after he’s been died! That’s crazy!
How many others are going to want to do the same thing, even after many years that’s past?
And what are you going to do about the inheritances that was past to someone else simply because you were not married to him, after 10 years for example?
What ever happened to " ’til death do us part."? Is she gonna be married and widowed the same day?

Yeah that’s really weird. And by the way, it’s dead guy, not died guy.

Girl, Interrupted
Girl, Interrupted (1999)

IMDB rating: 7.00

Plot: Susanna is rushed to the hospital. Afterwards she discusses this with a psychiatrist. She had been having some delusions. She had also been having an affair with the husband of her parents’ friend. The doctor suggests that combining a bottle of aspirin and a bottle of vodka was a suicide attempt. This she denies. He recommends a short period of rest at Claymoore. Claymoore is a private mental hospital full of noisy, crazy people. Georgina is a pathological liar. Polly has been badly scarred by fire. Daisy won’t eat in the presence of other people. Lisa is a sociopath, the biggest exasperation for the staff – like Nurse Valerie – and the biggest influence on the other girls in the hospital. Lisa has a history of escapes, so gaining access to personal medical files is not a problem… Susanna’s boyfriend Toby is concerned that she seems too comfortable living with her institutionalized friends…

Why are some of my classmates looking down upon me?
I’m currently getting post-bachelor degree teacher certification and taking 2 night classes. I’m 25 years old, and one of the youngest people, if not the youngest person in the classes. Most of the other women in the class are around 30 and up, and a good portion of them are married with children (or divorced, with children).

I dress nice for class everyday, because I come from working a full-time office job…never slutty.

When I first started this class I was pretty shy, because I’m shy in all new situations, but now I’m very outspoken (not to the point where I bash people or interrupt people–I just have high participation). I also get a lot of male attention (I’m thinking it’s because I’m a decent looking girl and 25, as compared to the other Mom-types who come in wearing sloppy sweatshirts, no makeup, etc…not work clothes, like me).

I’m very, very nice to everyone, never gossip about anyone, but there are these 2 mid-30’s moms that seem to fixate on me and it’s very obvious they talk about me. It’s very obvious they say nasty things about me, and I don’t think I’m imagining it, because I have heard them say nasty things about other people, too.

I want to know, honestly, are there things that are considered rude to do in a class (I’m trying to succeed, so I’m not going to stop participating!)? I want to know if I could do anything to deserve them giving me the cold shoulder all of the time.

What do you think their problem is? How can I deal with them when I hear them whispering and look up and they’re both looking at me??

dont say slutty… who in the heck could ever figure all people out what makes their minds tick or think…. maybe you just count it as a challenge to your life.. everything has a challenge.. as much as we wish its all on a silver platter or spoon too ..it never is handed to us as smooth sailing ..so rather than focus on them in that wordy sense see it as a challenge.. and some people cant help what kinda clothes they wear.. good luck..

there will always be people like those 2 women eh? i don’t think you’re doing anything wrong just carry on the way you are. its probably because they think you’re weird or out of your league or some silly reason. with those sort of people you just have to try and ignore them (confronting them usually gets nasty), they obviously can’t help themselves. they are sad people. lol

don’t let them get in your way o your goals, you have as much right to be there as they do. :-)
flipper | Nov 19, 2009

They are probably jealous. some people never grow out of that stage from when they are in hs. and i wouldnt say its just you. They are probably jealous of lot of people if its not only you they talk about. I would just act like you dont even know they are saying anything. Be especially nice to them, and if they don’t stop it then whatever, they are acting like children and theres nothing you cn do
penguin and buttons | Nov 19, 2009

Don’t worry about them, there are some people who are just bitter about almost everyone. You say that those two women gossip about other people too, so it probably means that they just like to talk rudely about everyone because they find a sick pleasure in doing so. Another reason might be because they are in fact jealous of your youth and they are angry about not being able to match you physically.

Just forget about people like that, I’m pretty sure that there are heaps of people in your class that like you.
John | Nov 19, 2009

You sound like a terrible person, being all smart and pretty and dressed up all the time. I’d talk crap too. hahahha jk

People only gossip when they feel inferior. Don’t talk it to heart, take it as a boost of self esteem :D
Allison | Nov 19, 2009

If you haven’t discovered this yet, there’s a lot of feelings of competition in both genders. I think you’ve already noted the things they would be jealous about.

I would try to make friends with them. Let them know you’re just like them on the inside.

No one likes to be looked down upon. It seems that you look down upon them….(slutty, sweats, etc.).

We females pick up on that sort of thing right away, just like you picked up on their feelings right away.

If you ‘flaunt’ what you have, then you can expect to be judged for it.
learningmatters | Nov 19, 2009

Jealous! They sound like bitter, old battleaxes. If not for the age, I’d think I wrote this. I had the exact same problem. I just minded my own business, but because of my participation and clothes, people thought it was okay to verbally rip me apart. *sigh*
