He is putting up good numbers, but his injured knees are troubling.
I’m sure the Yankees would like to keep him because, when healthy, he is still a good hitter.
But the problem with the Yanks the last couple years is that they’ve had too many "DH" type players. They’ve actively worked to fix this by dumping guys like Giambi in favor of complete players like Tex, and adding guys with defensive versatility like Swisher. They already shelled out big bucks for their 1B and pitchers…I’d expect that a big OF bat with gold-glove skills will be high on this off-season’s shopping list.
I expect the Yankees to offer a 1-year "loyalty" contract, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a team like Anaheim offered a bit more…Seattle is also another possibility. If Seattle offers two-years, he’ll be gone.

Well, he’s 35 years old, so his career could end in a couple of years. And he hit 2 home runs in last night’s (august 23) game against the Red Sox. I think the Yankees will re-sign him at least for another season.

The Yanks should re-sign him for 1 more year if he keeps on getting 2 homer games like the 2 against the Red Sox’s. Hideki will probably go back to Japan if the Yanks don’t sign him. He is my favorite player and I hope he stays. So far he has 23 homers, 68 RBI’S, 45 runs, and a Batting Average of .265. Hideki I hope will play for the Yankees for at least one more year.

He will stay in New York, because like you said, he’s putting up great numbers with homeruns, hits, etc.

Hideki will probably be heading back to Japan to enjoy his retirement if the Yankees do not offer him a contract. Face it, his role is limited as a DH, and while a good one, the Yankees are contractually obligated to retain who could fill the DH role, such as Jorge Posada. I like Matsui very much, but with his knees being as bad as they are, his days out in left are over and his base running days are close to being over as well. I think it is why every at bat for him is hopefully the long ball. Godzilla is going back to Toyko….

They should at least try to resign him but I wouldn’t be surprised if Matsui is a little homesick and returns to Japan at the end of this season.

He might not pick up a glove for the rest of his career. He’s getting old, but obviously has power. I think the Yankees can finish up his career with a 4 year deal around 40 million, plus a few bonuses. There is a better chance of re-signing him than Nady.
